Product Details

This beautiful and unique domino game is an exact replica of the original that was carved by Dutch artists during the Renaissance times. Each ivory style piece represents a visage with its own moral significance, some of which are still known and some that have been lost over the ages. The domino set comes with 28 domino pieces, each with a unique relief sculpture, and is presented in a richly appointed footed, mahogany wood box.

History: The 17th century was a moment in the Dutch history characterized by great economic prosperity and political advance. A new civil society was led by the Protestant bourgeoisie, and was extremely liberal and democratic for its time. Fleets established Dutch colonies around the world, opening sea routes that turned Amsterdam into the international trading center.

Freed from the obligation not to paint the royal portraits and biblical scenes, the artists were interested in scenes of everyday life. Painters like Rembrandt, Vermeer, Jan Steen, and Frans Hals began to paint revolutionary realism that transformed the classic and decorative arts. Many artists took pleasure in exercising their talent, but the dominant culture required them to justify their art by presenting it as a warning against the perils of decadence. This is why this collection of portraits includes a famous Dutch Admiral, pastor, philosopher as well as a Dandy, a Satyr and some bizarre Grotesques. It is very likely that the portrait of the master engraver himself is among this collection of 28. Wood box -- 9-3/4" L x 9" W x 2" H Dominoes -- 1" L x 1/2" W x 1-1/2" H
