The Tile Countertop

Tiling a kitchen countertop is an option that is available to homeowners, especially is you don't have the kind of money needed to fit solid stone countertops. Tile countertops can provide you with many interesting options in designing the overall look of your kitchen.

Tiles come in many shapes and sizes but getting them to fit on a pre-designed kitchen countertop surface would pose no problems. Countertop tiles can be cut and trimmed to fit any bends or curves that you design onto your kitchen countertop. This flexibility allows you to go wild with your kitchen countertop design without having to work around the limits of your countertop surface. The only thing that you should pay attention to is the amount of surface area that needs to be filled so that you get enough countertop tiles to do the job.

Other than shape and size, countertop tiles come in a whole range of materials. You can have stone tiles like granite or marble that can provide you with an expensive look without having to actually spend so much. Glass tiles can add a little exotic look to your countertop although it can be a little fragile if subjected to heavy activity. If you tile your countertop with glass tiles, then it might be a good idea to design a little island in the kitchen, mobile or otherwise, to do heavy work on.

Ceramic tiles on the kitchen countertop might not be a very good idea unless you really know how to take care of them. Ceramic tile are usually quite porous. A kitchen countertop tiled with ceramic can be very susceptible to staining. There are sealing agents available to preserve the beauty of ceramic countertop tile but you have to care for it properly so that the sealing agent is strong enough to protect the ceramic tiles.

The grout will have to be cared for as well when it comes to tiling kitchen countertops. Ensure that the grout is properly laid and that is well sealed. Poorly sealed grouts can absorb moisture and be a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus.
